Thai Airways Company, Thai Airways, or THAI is an airline from Thailand that formed in 1988. The airline is based primarily at Suvarnabhumi Airport and headquartered in Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, Chatuchak District, Bangkok.

THAI is a founding member of the Star Alliance. The airline is the second-largest shareholder of the low-cost airline Nok Air with a 21.80 percent stake and launched a regional commercial airplane named Thai Smile in mid-2012 using the latest fleet of Airbus A320s.

In the beginning, Thai Airways was a joint venture between Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) and Thailand's domestic airline, Thai Airways Company. The purpose of this joint venture is to create an international wing for Thai Airways. SAS provides various training for operational, managerial, and marketing expertise. This was done so that the creation of a fully independent national airline in a short time.

Through this training, Thai citizens are gradually able to assume full managerial responsibility. Until finally, on May 1, 1960, the combined airline made the first commercial flights, and even flights operated to nine Asian destinations abroad.

The airline's first intercontinental service using Douglas DC-8 began in 1971 with flights to Australia, then to Europe the following year. Some larger Douglas DC-10 wide-body tri-jets were obtained in the 1970s and began flights to North America starting in 1980.

On April 1, 1977, after joining SAS for 17 years, the Thai government bought the remaining 15 percent of shares owned by SAS, and Thai Airways became wholly-owned airlines by the Thai government. In 2019, the company is owned by the Thai Ministry of Finance by 51 percent of the shares, while 47 percent of its shares released on the Thai Stock Exchange.

Thai Airways route

Thai Airways, including its subsidiaries, has flights to 84 destinations in 37 countries using 90 aircraft. The airline was once the operator of two of the longest non-stop routes in the world. The route is Bangkok - Los Angeles and Bangkok - New York City. However, due to high fuel prices, aircraft fleet withdrawals, baggage weight limits, and rising airline ticket prices, the airline no longer operates the non-stop route.
