British Airways is a British national airline headquartered in Waterside, Harmondsworth, and is near its main center, London Heathrow Airport. British Airways is the second-largest airline in the UK, based on fleet size and passenger capacity. In January 2011, the airline merged with Iberia and formed the International Airlines Group (IAG), a holding company registered in Madrid, Spain. IAG is the third largest airline group in the world in terms of annual revenue and the second-largest in Europe. IAG is also listed on the London Stock Exchange and the FTSE 100 Index. British Airways is the first passenger airline to generate more than $ 1 billion on one air route in a year (from April 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018, on the New York JFK - London Heathrow route).

British Airways was formed in 1974 after the British Airways Board was established by the British government to manage two nationalized airline companies, British Overseas Airways Corporation and British European Airways, and two regional airlines, namely Cambrian Airways from Cardiff, and Northeast Airlines from Newcastle upon Tyne. On March 31, 1974, the four companies merged to form British Airways.

After nearly 13 years as a state company, British Airways was privatized in February 1987 as part of a more extensive privatization plan by the Conservative government. The operator was expanded by acquiring British Caledonian in 1987, Dan-Air in 1992, and British Midland International in 2012. Its superiority highlights the reach of state influence because many of the destinations in several regions are historically part of the United Kingdom.

British Airways is a founding member of the Oneworld airline alliance, along with American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, and Canadian Airlines (which now no longer exists). Today, Oneworld has grown to become the third-largest alliance, after SkyTeam and Star Alliance.
